Get involved in the union!

(THIS PAGE IS CURRENTLY BEING BUILT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE)
There are many ways to get involved in the union and the issues we are working on. Some are non-profit, others are paid. There are positions with a lot of responsibility for those who want to take a sabbatical and positions where you choose how much time and energy you want to put in. Since there are so many ways to get involved, it can easily be confusing to know where to start. Therefore, here you will find a guide to the positions you can apply for and what they do.

Paid positions (Arvoderade poster)

“Arvode” means that you are paid for your work. The payment for 100% work is 35% of the price base amount (“prisbasbelopp”), which is determined by the government.

Chairman (Kårordförande)

Like many organizations, the union has a chairman. If the board is the government, this is like the prime minister. They have ultimate responsibility for the union’s operations and lead the work of the union board. The chairman attends weekly meetings with the university’s vice-chancellor and other important councils and committees in the university management where they present the students’ perspectives on various issues.

Reception manager (Mottagningsansvarig)

Reception is very important for new students to feel welcome and get to know their class and others from their programs. The reception manager (MO) is the one who ensures that the reception takes place in a safe manner. The MO ensures that the selected reception groups sign contracts with the union and holds the training for them. If something happens during the reception, the MO is there to help. They check that the reception is going well and can suspend people who misbehave or violate the contract. They simply work to run the reception according to the union’s values and create a positive trend. The MO also organizes the thank-you meeting for those who apply for the reception and appoints the reception council.

For the General Council (FUM) to function smoothly, someone must direct the meetings. This is the speaker’s job. The speaker is also the one who calls the meeting, sends out all the documents that need to be reviewed and writes the agenda with what will be discussed at the meeting and in what order. If the speaker cannot attend, the vice-speaker can step in. The vice-speaker usually also helps by being the meeting’s secretary so that the speaker can focus on who will be addressed next and when it is time to move on to the next item.

Non-profit positions (Ideella poster)

If you find it scary to take on so much responsibility, you can choose to get involved in other ways as well. In the non-profit positions, you decide for yourself how much time you spend on your work and have more control over your time, but you can still be involved and have an impact.

Council member (FUM-ledamot)

If the student union board is like the government, the student union council (FUM) is like the parliament. FUM members are elected by students and represent their programs at the meetings. They get to vote on all decisions made by the student union board and discuss important issues affecting students. All paid positions (see above) are elected by FUM and they can make motions of no confidence if they believe that those elected are not fulfilling their duties. If this sounds like something to you, you should contact your section board and they can tell you more about how and when you can nominate yourself for the position. If you want to try being a FUM member but are unsure whether you will be able to come to meetings, you can apply as an alternate member. This simply means that if one of the regular members cannot attend for some reason, you can step in and take their place.

Culvert council chairman (Kulvertrådesordförande)

Most of the programs under NTK have culvert rooms in the basement under NAT. All the chairmen of these culverts sit on a council, which is chaired by the culvert council chairman (KRO).

Election comittee (FUM:s valberedning)

When all these positions are to be elected, the FUM election committee handles the election. They contact the nominees and interview them. They then submit a proposal to FUM about who they think should be elected.

Internal auditor (Internrevisor)

The union’s internal auditor reviews the union’s decisions, finances and budget and makes sure that everything is done properly. At the end of the year, they sign off if they think the union has done well. They also have an alternate auditor who helps out and if the regular one cannot participate.

Reception council (Mottagningsrådet)

The Reception Council is appointed by the Reception Manager (MO) and helps them plan and carry out the reception training and to ensure that all programs are functioning properly. It also helps the MO to gain better insight into the cultures and traditions of other programs so that they can feel more represented. If you are interested in applying to the MO, you can start in the Reception Council and see how the work goes.
